Biwa Pearls are cultured in Lake Biwa, a freshwater lake in Japan known for its exceptionally lustrous and beautiful Pearls.  Today, Biwa pearl production has all but ceased  because progress brought industries to the shore of Lake Biwa resulting in pollution. Other problems, like overfishing, have also plagued the industry. Today, genuine Lake Biwa pearl beads are quite rare.
