One of the rarer and more interesting 'hybrid' varieties of garnet, the Malaya Garnet is primarily a mix of pyrope and spessartine. First discovered in the 60's in the Umba River Valley bordering Tanzania and Kenya, research now shows that its composition can be highly variable or even multifarious, containing parts of spessartite, pyrope, almandine, and/or andradite.
